Metal Marking
- Engraving on anodised aluminium : instrument panels and part-marking.
- High quality black marking on Stainless Steel : suitable for branding (logos etc.) as very fine detail can be incorporated. This system may also be available on some other uncoated metals.
- Inexpensive marking on Stainless Steel : suitable for part-marking and simple line graphics. This system is fully abrasion and fire-resistant as the marking continues into the body of the metal.

How does Laser Engraving work?
Laser cutting and engraving is a non-contact operation, so allowing delicate and fragile materials to be processed. A far-infra-red energy beam is produced by the laser tube and directed via mirrors to a moving focus lens and hence onto the workpiece. At the focus point the beam is approximately 0.125mm in diameter (about the diameter of a human hair) : the high concentration of energy at the focus point instantly vapourises the workpiece material, making a mark or cut as required.
Artwork is drawn in Corel Draw on a PC. The computer’s “printer driver” interprets hairlines as cutting lines whilst thicker lines and filled areas are interpreted as engravings. Bit-maps (e.g. photos) may also be engraved.
What is the maximum size you can handle?
Maximum cutting/engraving area : 812 x 508mm (32" x 20") Maximum depth of workpiece : approx 200mm (8”) Cutting capability is according to the material – see “What Materials” below
How do I send you my design?
Drawings can be accepted for processing in the following formats:- Corel Draw, version X5 or below
- DXF or DWG (Autocad 2000 or R14 formats)
- Adobe Illustrator files (version CS4 or below)
- Bit-maps (JPG, TIF or BMP)
- On paper - should be defined enough to allow a good quality scan
What colour labels and stickers can you do?
These colours are standard and held in stock :
Labels/signs in 2-colour 1.6mm acrylic material- White/Black
- Black/White
- Red/White
- White/Red
- Blue/White
- Brushed stainless steel/Black
- Brushed silver/Black
- Black/Silver
- Yellow/Black
- Black/White
- Brass/Black
Many other colours/combinations are available, most of which are obtainable from our suppliers on next-day delivery. If you have a particular requirement please ask as we are very likely to be able to help.
What materials can you cut and engrave?
WOOD AND SIMILAR MATERIALSSuitable for cutting and engraving. Cutting is clean up to 6mm thickness : above this, some soot and charring of the cut edges may occur.
- Solid wood
- Interior grade plywoods
- Hardboard
- MDF
- Cardboard
- Paper
Suitable for cutting and engraving -
- Engraver's plastic. (2-layer, 2-colour material for signs, labels and badges) 0.1 to 3mm thickness.
- Acrylic sheet ("Perspex"). Up to 15mm thickness. Cast is better than extruded for high quality engraving.
- Acetal/Delrin
- Nylon
- High density/high molecular weight polyethylene
- Polycarbonate ("Lexan")
- PETG
- ABS
- Polystyrene
- Polyurethane foams
- Expanded Polystyrene/foams
Other plastics may be suitable : please submit a sample and an MSDS.
What materials must be avoided?
- PVC-based material of any sort
- PTFE
- Exterior grade plywoods in thicknesses more that 1/16” (1.6mm) do not cut well because of the type of glue used in their manufacture : the edges are likely to be charred and (unless protected) the top and bottom surfaces get contaminated by smoke and soot. Engraving plywood is OK.
Do you charge a set-up fee?
We do not normally charge a separate set-up fee unless the work necessary to make your artwork usable is excessive. We will always warn you and get your agreement if a charge is to be made.
Original graphical and mechanical design work is always chargeable and we will negotiate the fee before work commences.
Minimum Order, Payment Terms and Delivery charges
The minimum order value is normally £20, though this can be negotiated for repeating business.
For one-off orders, payment is due immediately upon delivery. For repeating business a credit account may be arranged.
Delivery by post or courier (as appropriate) is at cost plus a small handling charge. Local collections and deliveries (within 30 miles of Michelmersh) may be arranged.
